Will a gas mask save life in case of fire?

The most effective respiratory protection is a gas mask (or full face respirator). But it's not all that simple: most gas masks do not protect against carbon monoxide, which is formed in case of fire. Activated carbon does not have such property. Carbon monoxide, like other combustion products, is dangerous and even fatal. But there is a way out – hopcalite, a unique substance based on manganese dioxide obtained by electrolysis. Carbon monoxide burns on the hopcalite surface to form safer carbon dioxide (CO + O2 = CO2). Based on this simple reaction, an entire self-rescuer industry has grown. In case of fire, you just need to put on a self-rescuer (or escape hood) with a hopcalite filter and get out of the smoke. In case of fire, the ambient temperature is several times higher. That is why a fire-resistant hood that withstands open flames and hides a beard, long hair and glasses was added to the filter.
